The summer is drawing to a close, but we can still make the most of end-of-summer bounty. My favorite late-summer fruits are rich, sweet figs. Different varieties reach their peak at slightly different times of year, but a favorite in Italy are fichi settembrini (September figs), which, as their name suggests, are those that hit their peak in the month of September as the sultry heat of August gradually gives way to crisp Autumn. They're generally smaller than earlier summer varieties, but also much sweeter.
This fig and mascarpone tart, with a crisp crust flavored with lemon zest enclosing a creamy mascarpone filling topped with caramelized figs, is a perfect way to close an end-of-season lunch or dinner.
