About

With the 86th Annual Academy Awards this Sunday evening, we've got movies on our minds as we head into the weekend. But even as we root for some of the year's biggest blockbusters and indie flicks, we can't help but notice at least one movie genre MIA in the list of nominees. That's why today's mission is to honor a group of films (and an entire About.com site!) that doesn't always get the love at the box office it often deserves.

War Movies: The Rules of Engagement
According to Johnny Rico, the About.com War Movies Expert, war films have a certain moral expectation and responsibility that other genres of cinema do not share. That's why he created the four major rules of war films that filmmakers should abide by when presenting these historical conflicts to the world audience.

Whether you're a movie buff or just tuning in for the fashion, we're here to help you make the most out of award season. Want more? Follow @aboutdotcom for some fun facts about the Oscars during the live telecast starting at 6pm EST.

And the Nominees Are....
Academy members had a few surprises up their sleeves when it came to voting for the 2014 Oscars. Names curiously missing from the list of nominees include Tom Hanks (who could have been a dual nominee for Saving Mr. Banks and Captain Phillips), Robert Redford, Forest Whitaker, Emma Thompson, and Daniel Bruhl. Instead of Bruhl, Jonah Hill—who hadn't received any love from critics groups or guilds—snagged a Best Supporting Actor nomination. See the full list of nominees.
